Preparing for Breast Implants

Breast implants or breast augmentation, boob jobs, or enlarging the size of the breasts is one of the most popular procedures performed by plastic surgeons these days. Although there were early methods of enlarging the breast, during the mid 1900s plastic surgeons began the practice of inserting synthetic fillers directly under the fatty breast tissue.

People want breast implants for various reasons. Some people want to correct the shape of a congenital defect or deformity, some women want to replace a breast removed during a mastectomy, but the number one reason is probably purely cosmetic. Women feel they look better with large, firm breasts and getting implants is the only way to achieve that.

What is a Breast Implant

Before you make the decision to get implants, you should understand exactly what it is all about. Basically, the doctor will make a small incision underneath your breast and slide in a little sack. You decide the size of the sack. In most cases, you will be given several sizes to try out before the operation.

You slip the practice boobs into your bra to see which size is right for you. Enormous breasts on a small framed woman do not always look as good as you may think they will. It is best to stick with a size that will not make you look abnormally disfigured. You then decide what type of implant you would like.

Most surgeons have a specific make and style of implants they like to use. You may want to take the doctor’s recommendation rather than try to make your own decision. The plastic surgeon has done this many times and he has a very good idea of what works for certain body types, and what will not work.

Ask why he recommends this particular make and style. Remember, this foreign item will be going to your body, so the final decision is yours. If you don’t agree with the reasons the doctor gives for recommending that type, talk about it. Ask questions and don’t stop asking question until all of your questions have been answered to your satisfaction.

The three main types of implants:

  • Saline – The saline implant is an elastic polymer silicone sack filled with a sterilized saline solution.
  • Silicone – The silicone implant has the same elastic polymer sack, but is filled with a silicone gel.
  • Other – This is a composition of materials. It can include fillers such as soybean oil and polypropylene.

The Placement of the Implant

Now that you know what you are having implanted, you and your surgeon must decide where to put the implant. You can have it either over or under the pectoralis muscle. Opinions differ as to which is best. Again, ask questions. Ask why your surgeon prefers one over the other. Ask what the difference is and how this can affect you personally.

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure. Just as with any operation, you don’t want to go in without knowing all the details.
